This image is an illustration, not a photo of an actual facility.
A guide to mobile data for a Korea casino trip: how an eSIM, a rented pocket Wi-Fi router and carrier roaming differ, what to check before you apply, and how phones are handled at casinos, based on official websites.
On a trip to a casino in Korea, you will often use your phone's data connection: getting from the airport, checking maps, and looking up the latest information on a casino's official website. It helps to decide how you will get online before you leave.
This article covers three ways to get mobile data in Korea: an eSIM, a rented pocket Wi-Fi router, and your mobile carrier's international roaming. It organizes the conditions and cautions shown on each provider's official website (checked November 2026). Services and prices can change, so please check the official website for the latest details before you sign up.
This article is about trips to real casino venues in Korea, not online casinos. Prices change often, so they are not listed here.
Three options: eSIM, pocket Wi-Fi and roaming
The table below sets out what you need beforehand and the main cautions on each official website.
| Option | What you need beforehand | Main cautions on the official website |
|---|---|---|
| eSIM (example: Glocal eSIM) | A phone that supports eSIM and is SIM-unlocked. You set it up on Wi-Fi using a QR code sent by email after purchase | Data only: no calls or SMS, and no phone number is assigned. The profile is issued right after purchase, so it cannot be cancelled |
| Pocket Wi-Fi rental (example: Gmobile's Korea pocket Wi-Fi) | Apply on the website and choose how to receive it (pick-up in Korea or in Japan). Each has its own application deadline | Heavy use such as video streaming or large downloads may slow or stop the connection. A plug adapter is not included |
| Mobile carrier roaming (examples: Docomo "Sekai Sonomama Giga", au "au Kaigai Houdai") | Your current plan must be eligible. Whether you must book or apply in advance depends on the carrier and plan | Docomo's Sekai Sonomama Giga does not cover calls, SMS or public Wi-Fi. Using it outside eligible countries or regions may cost a lot |
Based on each provider's official website (checked November 2026). Prices are not listed because they change. We could not confirm the list of eligible countries and regions on Docomo's official page when this article was written.
What to check before using an eSIM
Glocal eSIM's product page for Korea (Glocalnet) states the following (checked November 2026).
- You need a phone that supports eSIM. The page says "iPhone XS or later, the latest Android models, etc." and tells you to check whether an "EID" (32 digits) is shown on the settings screen.
- Your phone must be SIM-unlocked. If you scan the QR code on a phone that is not unlocked, the QR code cannot be reused.
- On some AQUOS models, cases of not being able to connect abroad have been confirmed, and the page says there is no guarantee if it does not connect.
- The QR code and instructions arrive by email about one hour after purchase. You set it up on Wi-Fi. Check the product page for details on how to use it. The page asks you not to use carrier email addresses (docomo.ne.jp, ezweb.ne.jp, i.softbank.jp) when ordering, because the email may not arrive.
- The validity period is counted in 24-hour units from when the connection starts in Korea. However, the page says some plans start counting in Japan, so check the plan description. You must start using it within 90 days of purchase.
- Speed is "best effort." Even on unlimited plans, speed may be limited if you use a lot of data in a short time, because of the local carrier's usage limits. Tethering is supported.
- Calls and SMS are not available, and no phone number is assigned. Calling apps such as LINE can be used. If you need a phone number, this product alone is not enough, so you will need to combine it with another option.
For pocket Wi-Fi rental, check how to receive it and the deadline
Gmobile's official page for its Korea pocket Wi-Fi states the following (checked November 2026).
- The fee is flat, with no extra charge based on data used. Unlimited plans are the main offering, and the page says it works in 16 areas across Korea.
- There are two ways to receive it. For pick-up in Korea, you collect it at a dedicated counter at Incheon International Airport (Terminals 1 and 2), Gimpo International Airport or Gimhae International Airport. For pick-up in Japan, you can choose home delivery or a counter at an airport in Japan, among other options. The page says it cannot be shipped to Okinawa Prefecture.
- You can only apply on the website, not by phone. The page gives the deadline as "before 23:00 on the departure date" for pick-up in Korea and "16:00 the day before departure" for pick-up in Japan.
- Heavy use such as video streaming, online games or large downloads may slow or stop the connection. Speed may also be limited when a base station is congested.
- Whether a plug adapter is included is described differently within the official page. Please check the included items on the official website before you apply. It cannot be used on a ship or at sea.
- The return method and deadline are described differently in the main text and the FAQ of the official page. Check the return method and deadline on the official website before you apply.
For carrier roaming, check eligible countries and whether to book
You can also use your current carrier's international roaming. The official information differs by carrier (checked November 2026).
Docomo "Sekai Sonomama Giga"
- You must apply (the application itself is free of monthly charge, and you only need to apply once). However, Docomo MAX, Docomo Poikatsu MAX and ahamo are described as needing no application: you just turn on data roaming abroad.
- You can choose a usage period from 1 hour to 30 days. If monthly usage exceeds 30 GB, speed is limited until the end of that month.
- You can book in Japan through the "docomo Overseas" app or a dedicated website. If you do not start use within 24 hours of booking, the booking is cancelled automatically. When starting use on an iPhone or iPad, you need to turn off iCloud Private Relay.
- Voice calls, SMS and public Wi-Fi are not covered. Once use starts, the flat fee is charged even if you do not use data.
- The page warns that using it in countries or regions that are not covered may be costly. We could not confirm the list of eligible countries and regions on the official page when this article was written, so be sure to check on the official website whether it works in Korea.
au "au Kaigai Houdai"
- The page states that Korea is among the countries and regions eligible for the discounted advance-booking rate. Booking in advance is optional, and is done in Japan through a dedicated app.
- Eligible lines are au, UQ mobile and povo 1.0. For au lines, you must sign up for Data Charge (free of charge).
- Voice calls and SMS abroad are charged separately. Tethering is included, but au requires a tethering option, while UQ mobile does not.
- If you use a large amount of data within 24 hours, speed may be limited.
- If you delete the app's data, reset the phone or uninstall the app after booking, you cannot change or cancel the booking abroad.
- The page says au Kaigai Houdai will be renewed from February 1, 2027, and advance booking will be discontinued. Details depend on your travel date, so check the latest information on the official website.
Plans from other carriers, such as SoftBank, also differ in eligible countries, whether you must book, and how calls and SMS are handled. Check your own carrier's official website.
Whether you need calls or SMS changes your options
Glocal eSIM does not support calls or SMS and assigns no phone number. Docomo's Sekai Sonomama Giga also excludes voice calls and SMS. au states that voice calls and SMS abroad are charged separately.
Before you leave, check whether a calling app such as LINE is enough, or whether you need to receive SMS on a phone number. This makes it easier to choose.
Check how your phone may be used at the casino
Some casinos have rules about electronic devices and cameras inside. The following is stated on the official websites we have checked (checked October 2026).
- Paradise Casino's official website says cameras, electronic products, metal items and food and drink cannot be brought into the casino and must be left at the check room before entering. We have not confirmed whether a smartphone counts as an electronic product, so please ask the staff before you enter.
- On Seven Luck Casino's official website, the "Casino Manners" page says not to use electronic devices at the tables.
- Photography is limited to designated places such as the entrance at Paradise Casino, and is prohibited inside Seven Luck Casino Gangnam COEX.
Entry procedures and rules about what you can bring are organized by casino in Your First Visit to a Korean Casino: A Beginner's Guide.
Order of preparation before you leave
You can prepare your mobile data in the following order.
- Check whether your phone supports eSIM and is SIM-unlocked
- Decide whether you need calls or SMS
- Decide between eSIM, pocket Wi-Fi and roaming, and check the conditions and application deadline on the official website
- If you rent pocket Wi-Fi, choose how to receive it (pick-up in Korea or in Japan)
- Set up an eSIM on Wi-Fi, following the timing advice on the product page
This order is one suggestion for preparing, not a fixed rule.
